Can Ball Pythons Eat Reptilinks? What the Science Says

If you have a ball python, you might be wondering if you’re feeding the right food. Ball pythons are commonly depicted as eating mice, but is this truly in line with their natural diet? Many people have found that Reptilinks can be an intriguing and enriching option for their pythons, and there’s a scientific reason why. To understand, you’ll need to learn more about how ball pythons live in the wild, what they eat, and the nutrients they rely on to stay healthy.

What Ball Pythons Eat in the Wild

Ball pythons are native to the grasslands and wooded areas of Central Africa. This region spans from Ghana and Nigeria all the way to Uganda and includes a wide variety of possible food, water, and habitat sources. Because the daylight hours become so hot in these places, ball pythons are often found underground, whether in termite mounds or inside other animals’ burrows. This helps to explain what they eat: small ground mammals.

There’s a bit of a difference between males and females when it comes to food. Males are more likely to consume birds from time to time, most likely because they are more active during the day than females who could be nesting with eggs. Females fill in the bulk of their diet with small mammals, but make no mistake—a ball python’s average diet is rodents and other small creatures, no matter their sex.

Among them, rats, bats, and shrews are common, but few prey items are as closely associated with the ball python as African soft-fur rats. Unlike many average rat feeders, ASF rats contain a higher volume of protein and dense muscle, which makes them especially appealing for keeping up a ball python’s weight.

With this in mind, we can look at the nutritional breakdown of the ball python’s native diet and see how it compares to what keepers can provide at home.

Understanding Nutrients and How the Body Uses Them

The nutritional value of the items you feed to your snake dictates not just the individual nutrients they receive, but how well they process them. In this context, there are two main factors to look at for ball pythons: a food item’s fat-to-protein ratio and its calcium-to-phosphorus ratio.

Fat and protein go hand in hand because snakes need both, but they need them in different quantities. Unlike mammals, snakes don’t store their fat subcutaneously (under the skin). Instead, that fat builds up around their organs, which can be dangerous and cause their organs to work harder than normal. If you feed your ball python overly fatty food, you can contribute to obesity and the risks associated with it. An increase in fat also means your snake will need more vitamin E, because this vitamin stops the fat inside the body from spoiling. By feeding a high-fat diet, you could be creating nutritional deficiencies.

Protein, on the other hand, supports your snake’s growth and muscle mass. Protein can be difficult for the gut to digest if it’s present in extremely high amounts, which is why your ideal food item will contain some fat, too.

On top of the fat and protein considerations, you’ll also need to think about calcium and phosphorus. If the snake is getting more phosphorus than calcium, the phosphorus binds to the calcium and leaches it from the animal’s bones. This can lead to metabolic bone disease, especially without enough D3 to process the calcium.

How Reptilinks Can Fit In

Based on what ball pythons eat in the wild, we can see that a balance of more protein than fat and more calcium than phosphorus are the ideal targets. With that in mind, many keepers enjoy incorporating Reptilinks into a python’s diet, especially the rabbit and quail links. On average, ground whole rabbit and quail will have a calcium:phosphorus ratio of around 1.3:1. In other words, the calcium is the higher value, which is ideal.

In addition, these meals are full of protein and come with the full spectrum of vitamins that your snake can only get from whole prey. Food items such as the liver and heart of a prey item contain essential nutrients, such as B vitamins and iron, which support proper circulation and nerve function.

If you have a picky ball python, or if you have Reptilinks already and are trying to transition your snake to using links, they might find that the new smell of the links is unexpected compared to their usual food. Try scenting the links with something like ASF juice, which mimics their natural prey, to stimulate their appetite. Ball pythons who learn to enjoy Reptilinks can still constrict them and perform all their natural behaviors, and the casing around the link is made of collagen (the same thing skin is made of!), so it is digested normally.

Given the nutritional balance of Reptilinks, they can be a great staple for your ball python’s diet or an interesting occasional prey swap if you want to give your snake some enrichment. Remember that engaging your snake’s mind is just as important as providing exercise, and exploring new scents and prey items is an effective way to achieve that!
